COPYWRITING TIPS FOR CLEANER AND STRONGER MESSAGE
We all learned to write in school, but persuasive writing—like sales letters, brochures, or web content—requires a sharper touch. These nine tips will help you write with more clarity, power, and precision.
1. Avoid Weak Verbs like “Is” and “Be”
These verbs don’t add much energy to your writing. Instead of saying, “There is a way to fix this,” say “One way can fix this.” Active verbs make your writing stronger and more direct.
2. End Lists with the Longest Item
When listing things, place the most complex or detailed item at the end. It gives your sentence a satisfying finish and avoids confusion.
Example: “He was loud, boring, and always late.”
3. Use Specifics Instead of Vague Words
Vague terms like “many,” “some,” or “nearly” weaken your message. Be precise whenever possible—it shows confidence and builds trust in what you’re saying.
4. Keep Modifiers Close to What They Describe
Misplaced modifiers can make your writing confusing or even funny (in the wrong way).
Example: Instead of “I hit a stationary truck coming the other way,” say “I was coming the other way and hit a stationary truck.”
5. Stick with One Strong Verb
Don’t say “operating and running”—just say “running.” One clear verb often does the job better than two similar ones.
6. Vary Your Sentence Length
A mix of short, medium, and long sentences keeps your writing lively and engaging. If every sentence is the same length, your writing will sound robotic.
7. Don’t Let Sentences Drag
Long, winding sentences tire readers. Break them up into shorter, more focused thoughts.
Example: Instead of “Laser beams, which have many properties…” say “Laser beams have unique properties. They’re created when atoms release energy.”
8. Cut Wordy Phrases
Why say “in view of the fact that” when “because” works just as well? Shorter phrases are easier to read and more impactful.
9. Avoid Repeating the Same Idea
Don’t pair synonyms like “thoughts and ideas” or use phrases like “completely finished.” Say it once—clearly and simply.
